The influence of Freud and the role of depth psychology in ministry beginning in the early part of the 20th century is the subject of Ministry After Freud, an important book by Allison Stokes, originally published in 1985.

Included are chapters on the founders of the clinical pastoral movement, Anton T. Boisen and Helen Flanders Dunbar, as well as Seward Hiltner, Paul Tillich and the New York Psychology Group, and a conversation with Wayne Oates. The new edition has an afterword by David Roth.

Allison Stokes is the founding director of the Women's Interfaith Institute, and has been a chaplain at Vassar, Ithaca, Rochester, and Yale where she earned her PhD.
